Excellent strength-toughness synergy in metastable austenitic stainless steel due to gradient structure formation

چکیده
The effect of cold swaging and subsequent annealing on the structure mechanical properties a 321-type metastable austenitic stainless steel was studied. Cold to strain 90% produced gradient with gradual decrease in α-phase content from edge center bar. Globular lamellar regions both strain-induced martensite retained austenite were found center, meanwhile, completely globular austenite–martensite dual-phase formed at edge. After 500 °C, (~30° below reverse martensite-to-austenite phase transformation temperature) microstructure refinement due simultaneous development recrystallization observed. Both ultimate tensile strength yield increased noticeably after annealing. Besides, notch toughness annealed specimen doubled comparison that cold-swaged condition almost reached level coarse-grained condition.

A New Maraging Stainless Steel with Excellent Strength–Toughness–Corrosion Synergy
A new maraging stainless steel with superior strength-toughness-corrosion synergy has been developed based on an innovative concept of alloy design. The high strength-toughness combination is achieved by forming dispersive nano-sized intermetallic compounds in the soft lath martensitic matrix with a slight amount of residual austenite. The good corrosion resistance is guaranteed by exactly cont...
متن کاملMartensite ? austenite phase transformation kinetics in an ultrafine-grained metastable austenitic stainless steel
A generalized phase transformation kinetics model is used to understand the martensite to austenite transformation in a cold-rolled and annealed metastable AISI 301LN ultrafine-grained austenitic stainless steel. The model shows that the presence of interstitial nitrogen and heavy cold-rolling is important to promote fast transformation kinetics, through rapid nitrogen-diffusion and austenite n...
متن کاملWarm Pre-Strain: Strengthening the Metastable 304L Austenitic Stainless Steel without Compromising Its Hydrogen Embrittlement Resistance
Plastic pre-strains were applied to the metastable 304L austenitic stainless steel at both room temperature (20 °C) and higher temperatures (i.e., 50, 80 and 100 °C), and then the hydrogen embrittlement (HE) susceptibility of the steel was evaluated by cathodically hydrogen-charging and tensile testing. The 20 °C pre-strain greatly strengthened the steel, but simultaneously significantly increa...
متن کاملCombining gradient structure and TRIP effect to produce austenite stainless steel with high strength and ductility
We report a design strategy to combine the benefits from both gradient structure and transformationinduced plasticity (TRIP). The resultant TRIP-gradient steel takes advantage of both mechanisms, allowing strain hardening to last to a larger plastic strain. 304 stainless steel sheets were treated by surface mechanical attrition to synthesize gradient structure with a central coarse-grained laye...
متن کاملMagnetic Properties of Metastable 304 Stainless Steel with Bcc Structure
Ordinary 304 stainless steel has a fcc structure and is non-magnetic at room temperature. By using a vapor quenching method, we have fabricated single-phase metastable bcc 304 stainless steel which is strongly ferromagnetic with a magnetization of 130 emu/g and a Curie temperature in excess of 550 OC. Upon subsequent annealing above 550 OC, the metastable bcc state transforms back into the usua...
